I think that's a myth.
More like - the software has become more demanding as there is newer, faster hardware.
I've also found phones get really bogged down when they're nearly full, a factory reset and only putting what you actually need back on greatly improves performance.
I have a work iPhone 5S and it's really quick, and the battery lasts 2/3 days. Mostly because I don't use it loads.
